modern farmhouse

Nestled within 160 acres, this project was commissioned as a retirement dream home.  Growing up in farm/country settings, they requested a home that spoke to this vernacular.  Considering the client's MS diagnosis, the house also needed ADA compliancy.  An elevator is housed within the grain silo.(also no thresholds throughout)  The remaining program was enhanced by the owner's energy efficient forward-thinking.

The residence boasts near self-sufficiency via several solutions.  A large wind turbine & geo-thermal system are in place.  Passive cooling/heating also play a role.  By shifting the rear two-thirds due South, it collects maximum fall/winter/spring sun, and allows for a thermal mass via the stained concrete floors.  The house can open the east/west facades creating a breezeway when warmer.  The remaining front one-third remains orthogonal, aligning with existing farm buildings.

The clients were also interested in utilizing eco-friendly processes /materials.(bamboo cabinetry/recycled resin panels)  Local woods & stone were used; seen in the knotty pine ceilings and stacked stone wall.  The latter is a spine through the home’s core.  It erodes as it moves back; providing closets/built-ins, stairway/fireplaces, and outdoor grill.  The building works with the gradual sloping site, providing a walk-out basement to round out this contemporary farmhouse.
